Challenge
Students retaking their GCSEs often lack confidence and motivation.
Insight
We used timely prompts to boost the motivation of GCSE students. This approach is based on the tried-and-tested idea in behavioural science that if people are given reminders at the right time, it can help them to take action.
Approach
We texted learners weekly messages of encouragement, plus reminders about upcoming tests or deadlines.
Result & Impact
The intervention boosted attendance by 21 per cent and the exam pass rate by 16 per cent (though a recent trial by the Education Endowment Foundation did not replicate this finding).
