More than half the reduction in emissions that needs to happen if we are to reach net zero by 2050 requires people or businesses to change what they do – be that eating more sustainably, using less energy, switching to electric cars or retrofitting homes.
These actions need to be easy and affordable in order for people to take them. That means sustainability incentives and programs must be designed well, with human behaviour in mind.
Many impacts of climate change are already here, meaning we must also adapt to a changing world. This might be through using less water, protecting our homes from greater risk of fires and flooding or transiting to more resilient food production systems.
At BIT, we partner with clients across the energy, transport and environmental sectors, working with large companies, policymakers, nonprofits and utilities to enhance their green initiatives with behavioural insights and rigorous evaluation.
Together, we have diagnosed the barriers to home retrofits, heat pumps and electric vehicle uptake; researched how low-income communities experience energy burden and green programs and equipped wildlife conservationists with behavioural methodologies to improve the impact of their work. We have also applied our expertise to improve the effectiveness of net zero communications, and explored public acceptability of climate policies.
Energy
BIT designs and evaluates behavioural interventions to encourage low-carbon and energy-saving actions.
Sustainable consumption
BIT partners with our clients to drive sustainable consumption through behavioural insights.
Wildlife & biodiversity
BIT partners with governments, non governmental organisations and nonprofits to collect critical data and generate evidence about what works to shift behaviour away from endangering animals and their habitats.
Sustainable transport
BIT tests, designs and evaluates behavioural interventions that support our clients and populations to choose the most effective sustainable transport choices.
Climate adaptation & finance
The climate is already changing. We must adapt to mitigate the risks which are often felt most by those with the least agency and the least able to afford the consequences.
