Matt Barnard

Head of Evaluation

Matt is Head of Evaluation in the Research and Evaluation team based in London. He joined BIT at the beginning of 2019, having previously been group head of communities, work and income at NatCen Social Research. Matt is a mixed-method researcher who specialises in studies involving vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations. He has conducted research and evaluation in the areas of problematic drug use, long-term unemployment, immigration and asylum-seeking, children’s social care services and abuse and neglect. Before working at NatCen, he was head of evaluation at the NSPCC, where he led one of the largest ever programmes of research and evaluation undertaken by a children’s charity, which included randomized controlled trials and in-depth process evaluations.

He is a co-author of the textbook Qualitative Research Practice and holds an MA (Cantab) in history and economics and PhD in the sociology of addiction, both from the University of Cambridge.
