Health citizens’ juries

  • 2014
Challenge

Obesity continues to be a challenge in Australia. While there is clear evidence on what works, implementing policies requires an understanding of public acceptability.

Insight

According to the principle of group decision-making, groups draw on the experiences and perspectives of a larger number of individuals, which can improve the efficacy of choices. It is both possible and effective for governments to engage citizens in complex debates around behavioural issues through citizens’ juries.

Approach

BIT supported VicHealth to conduct a citizens’ jury. This involved asking 100 community members to come together over a weekend to discuss the issue and propose realistic recommendations for healthier eating.

Result & Impact

By the end of the weekend, the jury had compiled and submitted over 20 thoughtfully considered recommendations to stakeholders for their direct response.
