Challenge
Engagement with remote learning tools is far lower than engagement with in-person learning.
Insight
We used two insights to try to boost uptake of remote learning tools:
- Timely prompts. If people are given reminders at the right time, it can help them to take action.
- Defaults. People have a tendency to stick with pre-set options (‘defaults’). Changing the default can therefore change behaviour.
Approach
We created new prompts to watch instructional videos after a person submitted a wrong answer. We also changed the default on an underused revision tool from ’opt in’ to ‘opt out’.
Result & Impact
Views of helpful videos doubled and use of the revision tool increased by 42 per cent, leading to increased answer accuracy.
