Challenge
Detecting cancer early, before any symptoms are noticed, maximises the chance of successful treatment.
Insight
According to the idea of social norms, we are influenced by the actual or perceived behaviours of those around us and tend to behave the way we think most other people do.
Approach
BIT developed an intervention to increase urgent cancer referrals by sending three letters to 244 practices with urgent cancer referral rates below England’s average.
Result & Impact
The GP practices that received the social norm feedback letters increased their urgent GP referral rate by 9.6 per cent compared to the control group.
