Dr Sarah Hayward
Sarah is the Principal Advisor leading the Wellington-based Behavioural Insights Team. Sarah has held policy, clinical, and research roles, but the common thread in her career has been working to improve the relationships and wellbeing of children, young people and their families. She has led policy and service development across different government departments in the areas of: primary mental health care; child and youth mental health; addressing the drivers of crime; and improving outcomes for children living in vulnerable circumstances.
On the clinical side, Sarah is a registered child and family psychologist and runs a small private practice in Wellington. She has worked as an international trainer for an evidence-based parenting programme.
Sarah completed her PhD in public health from the Queensland University of Technology. The topic of her PhD research was school-based mental health promotion. She previously managed the Every Family Initiative, one of Australia’s largest population health trials of an evidence-based parenting intervention. She has authored several articles on promoting family mental health and the identification of children at risk of developing behavioural or emotional problems.
